Fleas

Persistent parasites that infest pets, carpets, and furniture

About Fleas

Fleas are a common problem in Northwoods homes with pets, and can also be introduced by wildlife — deer, raccoons, and squirrels that pass through the property. A flea infestation can escalate quickly: a single female can lay up to 50 eggs per day, and eggs, larvae, and pupae hide deep in carpet fibers, upholstery, and bedding where they're protected from surface treatments. Effective flea control requires treating the pet, the home, and the yard simultaneously.

How to Identify Them

  • Tiny (1/16 inch), dark brown, wingless insects that move by jumping
  • Visible jumping movement on pet fur, carpet, or light-colored surfaces
  • Flea dirt (feces) — small black specks in pet fur or bedding that turn red when wet
  • Pets scratching, biting, or grooming excessively
  • Bite marks on humans — typically around ankles and lower legs, in clusters

Why They're a Problem

Fleas cause intense discomfort for pets and can trigger allergic reactions in both animals and people. They transmit tapeworms to pets and, historically, have been vectors for serious diseases. A flea infestation is self-reinforcing — eggs fall off the host into carpets and furniture, where they develop into new adults that re-infest the pet and the home. Without treating all life stages simultaneously, infestations persist for months even after the pet is treated.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

  • Pets scratching, biting, or grooming excessively
  • Visible fleas jumping on pets, carpet, or furniture
  • Flea dirt (black specks) in pet bedding or fur
  • Bite marks on humans, especially around ankles
  • Pets with hair loss or skin irritation from flea allergy dermatitis
  • Fleas visible when walking through carpet — they jump onto socks and pants

How K2 Treats Fleas

Effective flea control requires a coordinated approach: treating the pet (through your veterinarian), treating the home interior with an adulticide plus insect growth regulator (IGR), and treating outdoor areas where pets spend time. K2 uses products that kill adult fleas and break the reproductive cycle to prevent re-infestation.

  1. 1Assessment of infestation level and all areas of pet activity
  2. 2Interior treatment with residual insecticide plus IGR to all carpeted areas, furniture, and pet resting spots
  3. 3Crack and crevice treatment to baseboards and floor gaps
  4. 4Exterior treatment to yard areas where pets spend time
  5. 5Coordination with pet owner for simultaneous veterinary flea treatment
  6. 6Follow-up treatment 2 weeks later to catch newly emerged adults

Prevention Tips

  • Keep pets on veterinarian-recommended flea prevention year-round
  • Vacuum frequently — especially in areas where pets rest — and dispose of the bag immediately
  • Wash pet bedding weekly in hot water
  • Treat the yard if pets spend time outdoors — especially in shaded, moist areas
  • Inspect pets after time outdoors, especially in areas with wildlife activity
  • Address wildlife attractants — bird feeders, open garbage — that bring flea-carrying animals near the home
