Wasps & Yellow Jackets

Aggressive stinging insects that nest in and around structures

About Wasps & Yellow Jackets

Wasps and yellow jackets are a serious stinging hazard around Northwoods homes, cabins, and decks. Paper wasps build open-comb nests under eaves, decks, and overhangs. Yellow jackets nest in the ground, in wall voids, and in attics — and are notoriously aggressive when disturbed. A single nest can contain thousands of workers by late summer. For anyone with a venom allergy, a nest near a living area is a genuine medical emergency risk.

How to Identify Them

  • Paper wasps: slender, brownish-yellow with long legs that dangle in flight; open umbrella-shaped nests under eaves
  • Yellow jackets: stocky, bright yellow and black; ground nests or enclosed paper nests in wall voids and attics
  • Bald-faced hornets: large, black and white; large gray paper nests in trees and shrubs
  • Unlike bees, wasps have a smooth, shiny body and can sting multiple times
  • Increased wasp activity near a wall or soffit often indicates a nest inside the void

Why They're a Problem

Wasps and yellow jackets are aggressive defenders of their nests and will sting repeatedly without provocation when they feel threatened. Yellow jackets are especially dangerous — they nest in hidden locations, give little warning before attacking, and can mobilize an entire colony in seconds. For people with venom allergies, a single sting can be life-threatening. Nests inside wall voids can also attract other pests and cause structural issues if left untreated.

Signs of a Wasp or Yellow Jacket Problem

  • Visible nest under eaves, on decks, in shrubs, or in trees
  • Wasps entering and exiting a gap in siding, soffit, or foundation
  • Increased wasp activity around a specific area of the structure
  • Ground nest entrance — a hole in the lawn with wasps flying in and out
  • Wasps inside the home, especially in late summer and fall
  • Buzzing sounds inside walls or ceilings

How K2 Treats Wasps & Yellow Jackets

Wasp and yellow jacket treatment requires direct nest treatment with fast-acting insecticides. K2 treats nests at dusk when workers are inside and less active, using residual dusts for void nests and liquid treatments for exposed nests. Ground nests and void nests require special care to ensure complete elimination.

  1. 1Inspection to locate all nests — including hidden void and ground nests
  2. 2Evening treatment when workers are clustered in the nest
  3. 3Direct nest injection with fast-acting residual dust or liquid insecticide
  4. 4Sealing of entry points after nest elimination to prevent re-colonization
  5. 5Follow-up inspection to confirm complete elimination

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect eaves, overhangs, and deck undersides in early spring — treat small nests before they grow
  • Seal gaps in siding, soffits, and fascia to prevent void nesting
  • Keep garbage cans tightly sealed — yellow jackets are attracted to food waste
  • Avoid leaving sweet drinks or food uncovered outdoors in late summer
  • Fill ground holes and depressions that could become yellow jacket nest sites
