Cockroaches

Resilient disease-spreaders that thrive in kitchens and bathrooms

About Cockroaches

Cockroaches are among the most resilient and difficult-to-eliminate pests in existence. While large infestations are more common in urban areas, cockroaches do occur in Northwoods homes — often introduced through grocery bags, used appliances, or deliveries. German cockroaches are the most common indoor species and can establish large populations quickly in kitchens and bathrooms. They contaminate food and surfaces, trigger asthma and allergies, and are notoriously resistant to over-the-counter treatments.

How to Identify Them

  • German cockroach: small (1/2 to 5/8 inch), light brown with two dark stripes behind the head — most common indoor species
  • American cockroach: large (1.5 to 2 inches), reddish-brown — found in basements, drains, and utility areas
  • Nocturnal — seeing cockroaches during the day often indicates a large infestation
  • Egg cases (oothecae): brown, capsule-shaped, 1/4 to 1/2 inch — found in hidden areas
  • Musty, oily odor in heavily infested areas

Why They're a Problem

Cockroaches are serious public health pests. They contaminate food and food preparation surfaces with bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli, and their shed skins and feces are a significant trigger for asthma and allergies — particularly in children. German cockroaches reproduce rapidly: a single female can produce hundreds of offspring in her lifetime. Over-the-counter sprays are largely ineffective and can cause colonies to scatter and spread.

Signs of a Cockroach Infestation

  • Cockroaches seen during the day — indicates a large, established population
  • Droppings: small, dark, pepper-like specks in cabinets, drawers, and behind appliances
  • Egg cases in hidden areas — behind refrigerators, under sinks, in cabinet hinges
  • Musty, oily odor in kitchen or bathroom areas
  • Smear marks along walls and surfaces in moist areas
  • Shed skins in harborage areas

How K2 Treats Cockroaches

Cockroach elimination requires targeted gel bait placement, crack and crevice treatments, and follow-up to break the reproductive cycle. K2 uses professional-grade gel baits that cockroaches carry back to the harborage, combined with residual treatments to eliminate the population at its source.

  1. 1Thorough inspection to identify species, harborage areas, and infestation extent
  2. 2Gel bait placement in all harborage areas — behind appliances, under sinks, in cabinet hinges
  3. 3Crack and crevice treatment with residual insecticide to all hiding areas
  4. 4Void injection for wall voids and inaccessible harborage
  5. 5Follow-up inspection and re-treatment at 2 weeks to address newly hatched nymphs
  6. 6Sanitation and exclusion recommendations to prevent re-infestation

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect grocery bags, boxes, and used appliances before bringing them inside
  • Store food in sealed containers and keep counters and floors clean
  • Fix leaks and eliminate moisture under sinks and behind appliances
  • Seal gaps around pipes, drains, and utility penetrations
  • Empty garbage regularly and keep cans tightly sealed
  • Reduce clutter — cockroaches hide in stacked paper, cardboard, and debris
