Earwigs

Moisture-loving invaders of basements and gardens

About Earwigs

Earwigs are one of the more unsettling-looking insects homeowners encounter — their distinctive rear pincers make them appear threatening, though they rarely pinch humans. They're moisture-loving insects that thrive in damp soil, mulch, leaf litter, and decaying organic matter. In summer and fall, they migrate indoors seeking cool, damp conditions and can appear in basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces in significant numbers. They're also destructive to gardens and ornamental plants.

How to Identify Them

  • Elongated, dark brown insects, 3/4 to 1 inch long
  • Distinctive pair of forceps-like pincers (cerci) at the rear of the abdomen
  • Six legs and short, leathery wings (though they rarely fly)
  • Found in moist areas: under mulch, rocks, logs, and in damp basements
  • Nocturnal — most active at night; hide in dark, moist crevices during the day

Why They're a Problem

Earwigs are primarily a nuisance pest — their pincers look alarming but rarely break skin. The real problems are their numbers and their damage to plants. Large earwig populations can devastate garden plants, seedlings, and ornamentals overnight. Indoors, they're a sign of moisture problems and can contaminate food if they reach kitchen areas. Their presence in large numbers is unpleasant and indicates conditions that support other moisture-loving pests.

Signs of an Earwig Problem

  • Earwigs found in basements, bathrooms, or crawl spaces
  • Ragged, irregular holes in plant leaves and flower petals
  • Earwigs under mulch, rocks, or debris near the foundation
  • Large numbers appearing indoors in summer or fall
  • Moisture issues — damp basement, wet mulch against the foundation

How K2 Treats Earwigs

Earwig control combines exterior barrier treatments, moisture reduction, and habitat modification. K2 treats the perimeter, foundation, and entry points with residual insecticides, and recommends reducing the moist harborage areas that attract earwigs to the structure.

  1. 1Inspection to identify entry points and moisture/harborage conditions
  2. 2Exterior perimeter treatment to foundation, mulch areas, and entry points
  3. 3Interior treatment to basements, crawl spaces, and damp areas as needed
  4. 4Habitat modification recommendations — mulch management, moisture reduction
  5. 5Follow-up as needed based on activity level

Prevention Tips

  • Keep mulch, leaf litter, and organic debris away from the foundation
  • Reduce moisture around the foundation — improve drainage and grading
  • Seal gaps around the foundation, doors, and utility penetrations
  • Use yellow or sodium vapor outdoor lighting — white lights attract earwigs
  • Reduce irrigation near the foundation and in garden beds adjacent to the structure
